The Americas Latino Eco Festival (ALEF)

An important part of AFC+A’s origin story, ALEF is the nation’s premier event for diverse professionals working at the intersection of cultural and environmental justice which began in 2011 at CU Boulder, is now producing its 14th edition. The event invites artists, scientists, advocates, public policy leaders, and communties from across the Americas to congregate in the interest of exchanging ideas, sparking important dialogue, and incubating new collaborations.

As an international event, ALEF also hosts festivals in Mexico and Puerto Rico, expanding its impact and fostering cross-border connections that strengthen the global movement for justice.

Empowering Voices, Inspiring Change: Our Mission and Goals

ALEF’s mission is to elevate the voices of communities of color and women in conservation by fostering intersectional collaboration to better tackle environmental justice challenges. We leverage art and culture to advance shared values and promote inclusivity. Our goals include:

  • Reducing the Environmental Inclusion Gap: Today, minorities make up 40% of the US population but only 8% of environmental organizations. ALEF’s unique contribution to addressing this disparity is crucial and urgent.
  • Showcasing BIPOC-Led Conservation: As the first and largest event of its kind in the US, ALEF highlights BIPOC leadership in conservation and creative fields. Donor support keeps ALEF free and open to the public.
  • Blending Advocacy, Arts, Networking, and Education: Designed by Latino hosts, ALEF offers a genuine connection for all who support environmental conservation through a special blend of activities.
  • Gaining Esteemed Support: ALEF is supported by loyal donors like GOCO, the City of Denver, Whole Foods Market, and many other valuable partners.
  • Achieving High Visibility: ALEF attracts diverse audiences and notable public figures, gaining extensive media coverage and engaging communities on a large scale.
  • Creating High Impact: Since 2012, ALEF has engaged over 15,000 attendees, educated thousands of school children, and fostered numerous intersectional collaborations.
