Biking is more than a mode of transportation or recreation; it’s a form of freedom, a way to connect with the environment, and a path to healthier, more connected communities.
At Americas for Conservation + the Arts (AFCA), we believe a ride on a mountain trail can be transformative. Our new Mountain & Gravel Bike program combines the thrill of cycling with the calming practice of forest bathing to immerse participants in nature’s healing benefits. We take youth and families from historically underserved communities on guided bike adventures into forests and green spaces (about 80% of our outings are on forested trails within ~90 minutes of Denver)
To connect communities with the mental and physical health benefits of cycling in nature, fostering inclusion, wellness, and a sense of belonging on our forest trails.
We weave the practice of forest bathing into every ride, promoting human–nature connection and equity in the outdoors. This mission builds on our successful LUNA trail running, our Wilderness Hikes and Tree Planting programs, which demonstrate the power of blending athletics with awe-inspiring nature and mindfulness.
Despite cycling’s benefits, not everyone has had equal access. Outdoor and cycling spaces often reflect broader social inequalities. Many communities, especially Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), low-income families, immigrants, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities, have been excluded.
We believe biking spaces can either replicate inequalities or model new, inclusive ways of coming together. Our program commits to the latter, centering equity so that we not only expand who participates, but also expand what biking can mean.
Spending time in green spaces profoundly improves health. Forest bathing, the Japanese practice of immersing oneself in the woods, lowers stress hormones, blood pressure, and anxiety while boosting mood and immunity. Just 20–30 minutes among trees can reduce stress and improve happiness.
Cycling itself is a proven mood-lifter and stress reliever – and when done in nature, the effects are even more powerful. Exercising in green environments (“green exercise”) enhances mood and self-esteem. Off-road rides on forest paths amplify these benefits, improving cognitive function and emotional resilience through the combination of exercise and nature.
By pairing mountain/gravel biking with forest bathing principles, we offer a holistic wellness experience: exercise for the body, fresh air for the lungs, and serenity for the spirit.
Inclusive Nature Rides: Free or low-cost group rides on scenic forest trails, with loaner bikes, helmets, and support for those facing financial barriers.
Culturally Relevant Education: Bilingual (English/Spanish) bike clinics and workshops co-designed with community partners, incorporating cultural elements and adaptive equipment.
Community & Culture Change: Training ride leaders from within the community, promoting anti-bias practices in bike shops and events, and amplifying diverse cycling stories through art and testimony.
Lasting Impact & Leadership: Developing toolkits for replicating inclusive “forest biking” events, and mentoring community members into leadership roles to sustain the movement.
Together, these strategies reimagine cycling as not just a sport, but a joyful, healing, and unifying experience accessible to all.
I didn’t grow up with access to outdoor adventures or cycling culture. My first real experience was mountain biking, and it changed everything. It wasn’t just about riding, it was about discovering strength and freedom within myself.
Since then, I’ve tried fat tire biking, gravel, road, and downhill. Each style has taught me something new and pushed my limits.
One of my proudest moments was becoming certified as a BICP Level 1 mountain bike instructor. This wasn’t just a personal win; it was breaking ground in a space where people who look like me, with my earth-toned skin and immigrant background, are still rarely seen. Biking has become more than a sport, it’s my way of building resilience, connecting with others, and pushing forward even when life feels hard. I ride for myself and for those who don’t yet see themselves in this world of bikes.
Such a simple thing as learning to ride bikes has inspired me in so many areas of my life, it has helped me overcome many fears, it has offered me an escape when I need it and it is taught me that I can do anything.
