U-CAN: United Cultures for Arts and Nature

The UCAN camp is an extension of our Promotores Verdes initiative—a nationally recognized program that trains youth as community stewards, climate communicators, and advocates for the mental, physical, and emotional health services of nature. This model blends environmental science with cultural restoration, wellness practices, and storytelling, empowering youth to lead long-term change in their communities.

Choose from one of two sessions from July 27 to August 2 or from August 10 to 16! 

All applicants require the following to be fully accepted:

  • Age 13-18 from Puerto Rico or mainland U.S.
  • Nominated by parent, mentor or teacher.
  • Letter of Commitment required
  • Acceptance by AFC+A team

Why Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is on the frontlines of climate change and home to rich biodiversity, Afro-Caribbean heritage, and Indigenous Taíno legacy. It is an ideal place for youth to immerse in climate science, arts, and healing in a safe, bilingual,
no-passport-needed tropical setting.

Camp Guajataka

Located in the forested mountains of San Sebastián, Camp Guajataka is an 87-year-old youth camp featuring rivers, lakes, open-air classrooms, and farm-to-table meals. It’s a proven and secure site for forest immersion, wellness, cultural expression and outdoor leadership.

Nature Health Workers

Forest Trails

Explore guided and self-guided paths through the “Bosque de las Caobas”.

Water Activities

Enjoy canoeing and paddle-boarding on Guajataka Lake.

Survival Skills

Learn orienteering and essential outdoor survival techniques.

Merit Badges

Participants will be able to obtain over 45 different merit badges, such as:

Archery, Sports, Citizenship in the Nation, Fishing, Wilderness Survival, First Aid, Forestry, Astronomy, Cooking, Swimming, Canoeing and more!

PLT Certification

Students will receive accreditation from the nationally recognized Environmental Education curriculum PLT, which helps develop students’ awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of the environment, builds their skills and ability to make informed decisions, and encourages them to take personal responsibility for sustaining the environment and our quality of life that depends on it.
